St Paul’s offer five specialist classes that students from Prep to Year 6 participate in. Students also have an opportunity to participate in library sessions.
Students have a weekly 60 minute physical education lesson with our P.E teacher, where they learn fundamental skills and engage in games to develop both individually and as part of a team. In addition, students participate in another sport class each week with their classroom teacher. On these two days, students are required to wear the Sports Uniform. Year 5 and 6 students also take part in Interschool Sports on Thursdays during Terms 1 and 2, competing against other schools. St Paul’s belongs to the Bentleigh District Primary School Sport Association. A wide variety of sports such as netball, basketball, softball, tennis, cricket, football, soccer, volleyball, athletics and swimming are part of the interschool sport program.
Art is taught at all year levels by a specialist Visual Arts Teacher. Each class runs for 60 minutes. We celebrate the children’s work through displays around the school and an Arts Show every second year alternating with the School Concert.
All classes have a weekly 40 minute lesson with a Performing Arts Teacher. The focus for these lessons is on music, movement and drama. Instrumental lessons are also available after school and these are offered by a private provider, Creative Music for Schools. Every second year we have a School Concert alternating with the Arts Show.
At St. Paul's our Language Other Than English is Japanese. Students in the junior classes are introduced to Japanese through songs and games. Students in the senior years may have opportunities to exchange letters (in Japanese and English) with students in a school in Japan, as well as participating in Google Meet sessions with these 'penpal' classes. All students do a unit of study each year focusing on 'Tourism Japanese' to equip them with practical daily words and sentences. There is also a whole school Hiragana Blackbelt challenge each year, when students learn to recognise and write the first Japanese writing system, Hiragana.
At St Paul’s, ICT skills and Digital Technologies are essential to learning. Students use devices like desktops, Chromebooks and iPads to develop their tech skills. They engage in coding, digital citizenship, and hands-on activities such as programming Bee-Bots, building Lego WeDo models, and exploring 3D design. These experiences foster computational thinking and align with the Victorian Digital Technologies Curriculum.
Each class has a weekly Library borrowing session, where we encourage a love of literature by introducing students to authors, illustrators, picture books and a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. Students also learn how to locate books and resources. The Library is open during lunch breaks, allowing children to enjoy reading and explore its resources.
